Seaside Getaway

We decided that we needed a getaway in November to break up the monotony of remote schooling and working from home. We’d never been to Seaside as a family and a ton of people recommended it as a perfect family beach getaway, so I found a super cute house that was pet friendly and it’s a trip we’ve all been looking forward to for a month!

We packed up the laptops, textbooks, and white boards and hit the road after Zoë‘s Lady Rockets practice Sunday afternoon. We rolled into Seaside at 7pm after stopping at the Fred Meyer about 20 minutes away for a pickup of groceries for our trip. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of listening to the kids run around a rental house exploring every nook and cranny the minute we arrive. This time they were each armed with a sanitizer wipe to wipe down doorknobs and light switches as they went (thank you, Covid). 

After a quick dinner we went to bed. In the morning, we did a half a day of school (Z’s teacher was out and so she didn’t miss any live classes and is super efficient with her independent work anyway and Oliver just did a half a day if live classes, which was JUST FINE) and then walked to the beach before lunch to check it out. We are about four block from the beach and it’s beautiful. 

We hung out at the house for a while and then went into town to explore some shops and have dinner. Zoë and I made a beeline for the book store and Chris and Oliver went straight to the candy store. We were all very happy. 😉. Appetizers and drinks at Finn’s Fish House on their outdoor patio near a warm fire table brought us to dinner time, so we ordered dinner to go and brought it home with us.  Chris and I decided it was a great idea to add another night to our trip, so we did, easily, through Airbnb.  It was super easy and we were glad we did it.

Day two brought another half day of school and then Chris took the kids shopping for a new kite in Cannon Beach so I could read my textbook for my clock hours to chip away at that to-do list. They came home victorious and headed immediately to the beach to check it out. 

It was so much fun and the kids were really learning how to maneuver it (Zoë, of course, more patient than O at really practicing the technique patiently). We spent a couple of hours out there on the beach. The weather was very pleasant and the sunset was beautiful. 

Our final full day was Veteran's Day so we didn't need to do any schoolwork! We relaxed and played (the kids and Chris went to the beach for an hour to try the kite again, but alas, no wind), went and got takeout from a DELICIOUS Taco Truck for lunch, played some more, went into town for some ice cream, some beach time, and finally a takeout pizza to enjoy back at the house.

The day we left sweet Zoë did two of her morning meetings in the car (she worked in her math book WHILE holding the phone with the team meeting going: quite a feat!) and we were back home for the second part of the day.  It was a great trip (a little bit of the fun was taken away from the trip when, after we had been home for a day and a half we realized BOTH dogs had fleas...presumably from the house we stayed in) and we are so glad we got to go since Oregon and Washington just announced more state shut-downs due to rising Coronavirus case numbers.
